The elusive Aurora Australis is one of the hardest natural phenomena I have tried to capture. You need to have just the right conditions to be able to see it and people can go for years trying to chase it without seeing it. I have been able to capture it a few times over the years all with varying success as it depends on the intensity of the solar radiation and those darn clouds.
This night I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was in Phillip Island on holidays with my family as we were going to see the V8 Supercars. I was sitting eating dinner and an alert popped up on my phone telling me that there was a high chance of Aurora. I have seen these pop ups before but sometimes they eventuate to nothing.
I sat there wondering if I should interrupt my dinner and go or continue with a quite evening. Well I figured why not considering I am so south what did I have to loose.
I rushed off towards Pyramid Rock as I had been there years before and captured a very small Aurora. When I arrived and my eyes adjusted to the dark I could actually see the Aurora in the sky. Not the bright colors that the camera sees but a grey kind of cloud moving in the sky. I was so excited as I had only ever heard of this.
I quickly pulled out the camera and started taking photos. I was blown away with what I was able to capture and the best part is it lasted for such a long time I was able to get so many varying shots. This would have to be one of my most favorite images I have ever captured.
